Welcome to my 'Develop and use information literacy skills' blog, part of my Library and Information systems course.
As part of it we had to do a project on a topic of our choice. For it I chose steampunk.
What is steampunk?
There is no hard and fast definition for what is and isn't steampunk.
Oxford dictionary lists it as 'a genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery rather than advanced technology.' [
Oxforddictionaries.com (2012) Definition of steampunk. [online] Available at: http://oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/steampunk [Accessed: 21 Nov 2012].]
Wikipedia describes it as 'a sub-genre of science-ficiton that typically features steam-powered machinery, especially in a setting inspired by industrialized Western civilization during the 19th century, or a post apocalyptic environment.' [En.wikipedia.org (1980) Steampunk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. [online] Available at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk [Accessed: 21 Nov 2012].]
Over on steampunk.com, they describe it as 'first and foremost a literary genre, or least a subgenre of science
fiction and fantasy that includes social or technological aspects of the
19th century (the steam) usually with some deconstruction of,
reimagining of, or rebellion against parts of it (the punk).' [Steampunk.com (2012) What is Steampunk? | Steampunk.com. [online] Available at: http://www.steampunk.com/what-is-steampunk/ [Accessed: 21 Nov 2012].]
Hopefully in the course of this blog you get a better feel for what it is.
